Going native means taking on the culture traits of the people around you, eating the local food, visiting the local shops.

Whether one was born in Oakland, adopted Oakland as a hometown, or just passing through – Oakland is a great place to “go native” simply because Oakland is a great place.

The people you meet, the stores you visit, the contractors, and the many professional services available are a part of the whole Oakland experience.

The warm weather is here, and warmer weather coming, and the urge to go native should include one of the greatest things an individual can do to support his or her local community – and that is to patronize locally owned businesses.

It does not mean that you do all your shopping in Oakland, it just means you try and think local first. With today’s global economy and tight family budgets, you do what you have to do; but, when making choices, it’s good to know why keeping dollars local is important for the whole community.

Local businesses recycle money back into the local economy, and give greater support to our community’s nonprofit and civic organization. They are there to respond in times of disaster, and they vested in the community’s future.

Unlike Anyplace Else, USA, a community with a vibrant local economy retains its own character, helps make it special, as well as a great place to live and visit.

In promoting a local first effort, a community supports a thriving local economy and their own way of life. Readers can visit The350Project.net which explains simply and clearly how keeping local dollars local can help the whole community.

Some parts of New Jersey & New York have benefited greatly from the economics of outdoor recreation, whether it’s selling or repairing gear or tspending at stores and restaurants in local communities.
Outdoor recreation is abundantly available in Oakland, Ringwood, Mahwah, and the surrounding areas, and it is a growing portion of the economy that can have a real impact on local business and local economies.

Nature-based recreation attracts demographics – people – that appreciate nature, seek a healthier lifestyle, and enjoy spending time outdoors – and hopefully enjoy spending money in nearby towns.

According to a new report, “…. more than 140 million Americans make outdoor recreation a priority in their daily lives, proving it with their wallets by putting $646 billion of their hard-earned dollars right back into the economy.”

Oakland is ideally situated to benefit from this healthy lifestyle, and it is surrounded by other municipalities that have shown the same commitment to conservation and preservation which makes it possible.

The preservation of local, county, and state lands offer an array of outdoor activities from boating, to fishing, to biking, hiking, and camping. When we encourage people to reconnect with nature, we aren’t just investing in the land, water, and wildlife we love, but also in our economics.

With obesity becoming one of the single most important health issues facing Americans – and American youth – encouraging outdoor recreation takes on even greater economic significance.

For more information on initiatives of American youth please check out the–Outdoor Nation article on the SAO website
